Mystic Krewe of Brew                 August 13, 2002

Due to lack of available time, (again!), this issue of the Mystic Krewe of Brew newsletter will cover both our June and July meetings.

Our June meeting was held on June 20th, 2002, at the Boiling Point in Slidell, La.  The room we used was fairly hot and they ran out of most of the beer we preferred to drink.
The treasurer’s report indicated that we had $1775.52 in the kitty.
Jean Junius thanked us for our well wishes during his hospital stay and recovery.
Old business was discussed.  One item was the presentation of the crystal glasses for placing in the Crescent City Competition.  Jack Shugg and Ron LaBorde were the recipients.  Larry asked for names of any eligible members needing MKOB glasses.  He also mentioned that during a recent house cleaning his wife located the information on the beer openers the club is wanting to order.  He will work on this soon.
New business was opened to the floor.  No real new items were brought up, so the raffle ensued.
Doc Jeff was the first winner.  He picked the bottle of scotch.
Al, (that’s me!), took the first t-shirt.
Simon got the 2nd t-shirt.
For Show and Tell, Peter Cadoo showed us a cool “Master Flex” pump he picked up on E-Bay for about $85.00
Jean told us about his beer with too much foam and that he realized that he was getting much less wort and adding too much sugar due to “boil off”.  He’ll be paying closer attention to his measurements.
Once again, we drank just about everything anyone brought and it was good!!!!

Our July meeting was held on July 18th, 2002 on the patio at the Columbia Street Tap Room.
The Treasurer was not available for this meeting.
Old business was discussed.  Larry says that he needs assistance on the format for the graphics to be printed on the beer openers.  Marshall is willing to help out and Larry will be getting with him on this issue.  The club will need to make a minimum order of 150 openers.
Any eligible member needing MKOB glasses should contact Larry.  Don’t forget to tell him your initials to be engraved.
Patrick O’Neal of Zia’s Rotisserie donated a mini keg of pale ale via Jack.  It was delicious!
George mentioned that our usual Tap Room waitress, Jenny, was sick and couldn’t attend to us this evening and that we should help clean up when the meeting adjourned.
Jack Shugg announced that the Abita Brewery tour was scheduled for July 27th 2002 at 2:00pm.  It would be a VIP tour given by Abita Brewery’s president, David Blossman.  We were welcome to bring homebrew also.
** As the tour was 2 weeks ago as of this writing, I can tell you that the tour was awesome, but HOT!  The club made a nice showing of about 12 members or so.  We had a great time, drank a lot of beer, and saw a lot of cool brewery equipment!  David enjoyed a bit of our homebrew as well!   We even fed some to other “regular” tour takers!! **
New Business was opened.  “Final Friday” in Covington is an ongoing summer event held every last Friday of the month.  It was suggested that we could meet at the Tap Room and maybe have preferred service, but others felt that it would be overly crowded and we should probably just rely on someone having taps in their trunk ready for our cups.  No real decisions were made, so if you plan on going, get with others, Jack, Calvin, Ron to name a few…
The Raffle was held and I won yet another t-shirt.  I just love these things!!!
Larry won the scotch.
Doc Jeff won a glass.
Mark Moody won a t-shirt.
The raffle brought in a total of $44.00 tonight!
For Show and Tell, Nick Long showed off his homegrown aroma hops that he grew.  He says he acquired the hop root from Elvis.
Peter Cadoo showed us a book of his recipes and brewing history starting from 1981.
We held an auction.
A 6 pack of 16 ounce Pilsner glasses was bid on and was won by
Paul Chauvin who was a guest of Clay’s.
We tasted a lot of beer and again, they were great!

I will not be in attendance for the August meeting due to it being my wife and my 15th wedding anniversary.  I tried to convince her that a beer meeting would be a great celebration, but it didn’t work.  I WILL be seeing you all at the September meeting!

Be safe, be happy, and drink good beer!!!
