Mystic Krewe of Brew

 Meeting Minutes

 March 17, 2005

The March meeting was held at the Abita Brew Pub.  President Calvin Moorman called the meeting to order with Vice President Jason Hayes, Treasurer Mike Owings and Secretary Larry Hartzog in attendance.

The president initiated the toast to beer purity and welcomed our new member Anthony Gagliano.  Mike Owings presented the Treasurers’ report and provided it for members to for review.  As of the February treasury had $2,131.50 however with the collection of delinquent dues, raffle proceeds and outgoing payments the total as of the March 16 meeting was $2,333.30.  The treasurer’s report was reviewed and accepted by the membership.  Larry Hartzog noted minutes had been provided to members through the MKOB announce site.  The secretary made a call for questions, additions, corrections or clarifications of the minutes.  No comments were received and the membership accepted minutes as presented electronically and Larry provided the hard copy to the president

Old Business:  Calvin has received the ok for having the anniversary party at the Moorman Memorial Brew Shed.  Calvin found that we could get a 40-pound pig for $139 dressed and ready to roast.  Larry also had some information from the Crescent City Brewers about a guy that furnished the pig, the pit and did the cooking for $400 for a big enough pig to feed the Crescent City Crew.  No further decisions were made as to party date or activities.

New business:      Calvin asked for a vote on whether the club wanted to participate in the WYES New Orleans and the Zapp’s beer fest in Baton Rouge.  Club members voted to participate and Calvin reminded everyone that he need to know who will brew, and who will attend to serve by April meeting.  The date for the WYES is June 4.and October 29 for the Zapps’ beer fest.

Zea's U.K. Competition will be held May 21 and entries must be turned in to Zea’s by May 7.  No fee must use plain brown bottles.  Check http://mkob.com for style and entry details.

The Brew Masters Open competition is May 11.  The competition requires two bottles and must be turned in between April 20 and April 30. Entry fee is $6.00. For entry forms and further details go to http://www.brewmastersopen.com

Announcement was made that the tasting evaluation for the Hop profiles will be at Calvin’s’ on March 21 at 7:30 PM.  Eat before you come but no spicy food.

Dis and Dat:  Calvin and George Parr did an excellent job of leading us through a hops profile tasting.  They provided examples of all of the different tasting components that the panel was asked to Identify in the standard beers that were hopped with the three different hops Chinook, Cascade and Centennial.  It was definitely a learning experience.  Details will be provided at the meeting.

Zea’s has a great Belgian on tap at the moment. Jack Shugg reports that the little German microbrewery and museum, Heiner Brau  is up and running in Covington.  Hopefully Jack can provide an update at the meeting.

Gordon Biersch will be having a tap party for the Maibock on Thursday May 5.

Auctions and Raffles: My mind was to foggy by this point but Jim Boucher brought in some scotch I believe and I know one of us scoundrels won it and didn’t share.

 Show and tell: None

Great beers were enjoyed by all.  The beers ranged from cream and English ales provided by Jim Cooper to mai bock and barley wine crafted by Mike Owings and Mike Mitchell respectively.  Mike Owings “Crushinator” (namesaked for his agile biking ability) weighed in at a 1074 SG.  Mike also brought some of his dunkel, which was very tasty. Casey shared some of his awesome nut brown ale with us and Pat Haggerty crafted a nice balanced APA.  Dan Stein brought us an experimental Belgian he made by adapting one of the Crescent City brew off beers.  This beer had a nice Belgian essence provided by the Belgian rock candy and a nice alcohol content.

2005 Dues ($20.00) are due. If not attending meeting make checks payable to MKOB and send to
