Mystic Krewe of Brew                 March 21, 2002

Our 3rd meeting of 2002 was located on the wonderfully private patio at The Columbia Street Tap Room in beautiful downtown Covington.  We began the meeting at 7:42 pm this evening.  A little behind schedule due to members who phoned in that they running late, but were on their way.  We started the meeting with our usual toast to Reinheitsgebot.  For the benefit of our guests, and there were many tonight, here are the web pages for more info on Reinheitsgebot.

We started by allowing one of our guests, Tony Monjure, to talk to us about his new wine shop in Mandeville.  “Wine Down” is a wine shop featuring fine wines as well as imported and domestic craft beer.  The shop is located at 1000, Hwy. 59, about a block North of Hwy. 190.  He has a small stock of popular and specially requested beers and a large list that can be ordered from.  He has offered his shop for a special beer tasting evening and everyone in attendance showed an interest in participating.  We’ll let you know when this is scheduled.
Our trusty Treasurer, Calvin Moorman was in attendance tonight and reported that our club’s checking account had a balance of $1698.52 in February and at the time of this meeting had a current balance of $1782.52
Old Bidness, as our great Governor Foster would say, was opened to the floor.
The Crescent City Competition is going to start on April 5th.  April 6th is the deadline for entry, but if you wait that long, you will need to deliver your beer to Dixie Brewery.  Your best bet is to drop them off at Brew Ha Ha before that date!
Any members not paid up for the 2002 calendar year needs to get that money to the treasurer ASAP!  You will be barred from any further club meetings and we’ll post Doc Jeff at the door to stop you!!!  If any guests are interested in joining our club, the dues are $20.00 per year and you are required to brew a minimum of 10 gallons per year.  Please e-mail Ron Laborde at pivoron@yahoo.com for membership information.
Tony Burnell updated a price quote for a meeting place at the old West Point Pepperell Mill now called Trinity’s.  He says that if we would like to have a catered event, it would probably cost a total of $12.00 per person.  Not a bad price, maybe we can schedule an event there soon.
New Bidness was opened to the floor.
Tony’s offer to host a beer tasting event at his Wine Down shop was re-discussed briefly and the vote was unanimous.  I think Jeff Hages is the contact so maybe he can set that up.
Larry Hartzog told us that the beer openers had to be purchased with a minimum order of 150.  He is trying to get a couple of demo models so we can finally decide on which model to choose.
Lo and Behold, Gabe and the fez sporting duo arrived!  Mike “Elvis” Karnowski and Peter Cadoo always bring a bit of good cheer and fine spirits with them.  Thank you two for continuing to come all this way to share your brewing wisdom and great stories with us!  In fact, Peter told us of the great time he recently enjoyed at the San Francisco Barley Wine Festival.
Show and Tell began and Craig Sollberger showed us a fine siphon available at K-Mart for $2-$3.
The Raffle was announced and after a few last minute ticket purchases, the winning tickets were pulled.
Jean Junius picked up the bottle of scotch.
         John Dumia, a guest, won a t-shirt.
Jim Boucher lucked out with a bottle of “Thomas Hardy’s Ale,
            vintage 1995!
        Alton Rock won a t-shirt.
Craig Sollberger picked up a “How to Brew” book.
John Taube, another guest walked away with a great set of wrenches!
Tony Burnell, yet another guest, won a bottle of beer.  I think it
        was a Porter.
Ken Miller, our final “guest winner” took home a tube of some sort,
        not sure….
We tried a new event during this meeting.  An auction!  It went fairly well.
Jean Junius bought a case of Hacker-Pschor with a bid of $12.00.
Jim Boucher picked up the other case of Hacker for $13.00.
Ken Miller bought a bottle washer for $4.00.
Jim Cooper got the keg relief valve for a low, low, $2.00!
An aeration pump failed to get a bid!
Doc Jeff bought a brewing book autographed by Michael Jackson
for $10.00.  NO, not the gloved one!
Beer tasting commenced and we enjoyed quite a few great beers.  As usual everyone had a great time!  Thanks to all who attended and we’ll see you all at the next meeting on April 18th, 2002.  Again, I’m not sure where it will be!  Just keep checking the website and we’ll let you know!
