Meeting Minutes
May 19, 2005
The May meeting was held at the Columbia Tap Room. President Calvin Moorman called the meeting to order with Vice President Jason Hayes, Treasurer Mike Owings and Secretary Larry Hartzog in attendance.
The president initiated the toast to beer purity. Mike Owings presented the Treasurers’ report and provided it for members to for review. The treasurer reported our previous balance as $2,229.50 after reimbursements and expenses. Income from raffles, and new memberships generated $228.04 resulting in a new balance of $2,457.54 as of our May meeting. Brewers participating in the WYES beer tasting will be reimbursed up to $30 for ingredients when a receipt is provided. Larry Hartzog noted minutes had been provided to members through the MKOB announce site. The secretary made a call for questions, additions, corrections or clarifications of the minutes. No comments were received and the membership accepted minutes as presented electronically and Larry provided the hard copy to the president.
Old Business: Plans for a pub-crawl were discussed and everyone seem to agree that possibly August may be suitable for everyone. It was agreed that we would try to find a day in August that the majority of club members can participate. Calvin had researched some options for transportation. Tammany Tours 14 passenger van would cost us $200 plus $60 /hr. after 3 hours. They also had a 25-passenger van for $225 plus $67/hour. The best option was with Enterprise rental for $200 for a 15-passenger van and we pay our own driver. Larry still has to get back with the bus driver when we have a date to see what total price is for using this option. Larry suggested that with any of the options club members must pay in advance to reserve a seat but will get their money back when they show up for the pub-crawl. Those who reserved but don’t show up will not be reimbursed.
New business: WYES beer tasting participants were reminded to meet at Abita Pub the Thursday before the Event to pick up passes. Calvin reminded everyone that they needed to provide the liquid out hose and tap as well as gas in hose and connector for the manifold. Calvin was looking for maifold but will try to make one if one is not found.
The use of the mkob announces site was discussed. Basically this site should be used for club business and information. Do not use for discussions, jokes or trivial information. Especially do not use this site for off color jokes etc. There was some discussion as to providing a set of rules for the announce site and how it should be monitored or subject matter approved.
Bottom line, discussions and other info should be initiated on the mkob flame site only, clean responsible info on mkob announce. Contact Mike Owings for details on the use of the flame site.
Those participating in the Zea’s Competition and are judging should be at Zea’s @8AM, light breakfast will be provided.
Discussed that it may be possible to have a club meeting @ Heiner Brau brewery.
Dis and Dat: Just a brief note about some new brews on the north shore. Abita has a pretty descent Belgian wit as their select this month.
The Louisiana Grill to my surprise now has Liberty Ale and some of the Flying Dog products on tap at their bar.
Gordon Biersch is having their fathers day celebration all week end with special menus and double points for GB Passport holders.
Zeas’ has an even better deal for fathers’ day. If your grateful offspring treat you to lunch or dinner at Zeas’ on Sunday June 18 you receive a free empty growler that will be refilled for free on your next visit.
GREAT NEWS FOR GOOD BEER
Imagine, if you will, a world without Budweiser, one in which beer drinkers
make their selections based not on marketing and T&A, but on taste and taste alone. Imagine Bud Light, Coors Light and MGD being rump brands, criticized for lacking flavor and appeal, and Michelob carrying all the cachet of Old English 800. Sound impossible? Stephen Beaumont admits it probably is, but explains why there is reason to consider the possibility.

Auctions and Raffles: Thanks again to Jim Boucher for the Brandy and Larry for the insulated cold barrel. Peter Caddo was the winner of the Brandy and Willis Brewer won the cold barrel.
Show and tell: None
Great beers were enjoyed by all. This month tasting provided a great mixture of beers and styles. The German styles dominated this months tasting with IPA’s and APA’s coming in next with a sprinkling of barley wines, stout, a specialty porter, pumpkin beer and smoke beer.
Mike Owing single handedly supplied the majority of the german brews with an excellent Dortmunder,an extremely aromatic Maibock, followed by a Schwartz beer and topped off with his own “Crushinator” a dopple bock made from his own home smoked grain. STAY Tuned while I Digress. The “Crushinator” is the namesake beer for Mikes’ inability to stay on a speeding bike while plunging into a ditch. Since Mike lived through the ordeal, had smoked grain but was brewing impaired his fellow brewers Calvin , George and Jack pitched in and brewed the tasty smoked brew for our fallen bremaster. Digression Complete Return to main Thought.
Where was I anyway ? Additional german styles were provided by Peter Caddo with his Alt beer and Pat Haggerty’s Munich Dunkel.
Specialty beers ranged from pumpkin beer to hazelnut chocolate porter. Peter Caddo provided two pumpkin beers, one with spice and one without spice. I preferred the pure pumpkin to the spiced variety. Ron Laborde brewed a very tasty porter made with the addition of coco powder and hazelnut abstract.
Anthony and Mike Mitchell brought their brews from the Big Easy Brew off. Mike used Kent goldings hops and provided an English ale style while Anthony used the cascade hops to produce an American style pale ale. Both were extremely tasty.
Jim Cooper brewed a nice American pale ale with a nice hoppy aroma. While everyone’s taste buds were still in tact the final assault on the old buds were made with Ron Labordes’ double IPA. This was definitely a hopheads delight. The evening was finished out with Larry’s barely wine from last years Zeas’ brew off.
Calvin added additional hops to the “hop profile brews” and all imbibed and enjoyed following the meeting.

BEER TRIVIA: An 18-year study by the National Institute on Aging found that 50-plus men who consumed a drink a day during middle age scored significantly better on cognitive tests later in life than did non-drinkers.
