Mystic Krewe of Brew
Nov/Dec,
2004
Mystic
Krewe of Brew
Novembers’
meeting was held at the Columbia Tap Room and called to order by our new
president, Calvin Moorman. Congratulations
are also in order for the rest of our newly elected officers; Jason Hayes (Vice
President), Mike Owings (treasurer) and yours truly, the scribe.
New
business
discussed included an announcement by Calvin for club interest in participation
in a nationwide hops experiment. A
single beer style would be divided into 3 batches and hopped with three
different hop varieties to see how the flavors vary. For more detail check with Calvin. A vote was taken and the club agreed to participate,
stay tuned for further details. In
addition ideas for club events were suggested such as in-club competitions,
hosting educational speakers on beer related topics and the return of the
pub-crawl.
Old
Business
centered around the Christmas party at Jason’s house on December 11. Jason
will fry turkeys; Tom Conklin and Patrick have graciously volunteered to donate
beer for the party to supplement the homebrews.
Jason ask for everyone to e-mail him with what type of dish they will be
bringing so we will not duplicate entrees or desserts.
Russ Clayton discussed the MKOB
anniversary party. He presented the
club with two options for the party at the Fontainebleau State Park:
The first is the rental of a Pavilion for $100 from 9 AM- 7PM; the second
for a large private party cabin that would accommodate about 60 people for
$125/day but requires a 2 day minimum equaling $250 total.
Everyone seemed undecided so Russ ask for club members to further
research alternative sites and the decision on the place and time will be
deferred until the January meeting. While
the decision on the place remained undecided it was decided that we would bring
homebrew and Tom Conklin said he might be able to donate a keg or two.
The club would fund the meat portion of the party food and some of the
club members will cook it. The
remaining side dishes will be provided by the club members and if possible will
use beer as one of the ingredients. As
noted previously the place and time for the party will be decided at the January
meeting. Within two weeks after the
January meeting please contact Russ with what you plan to prepare and if you
will participate in the party.
Dis and Dat: Casey
Rowe announced he had a free Fridge up for grabs.
Dan Stein noted he would be glad to order specialty beers and if
interested you can be placed on his e-mail list by contacting him at danstein9772@netscape.net
I
am trying to put together a current club directory so if you have not provided
me with your name, current home address, home & work (optional) phone
numbers and e-mail address please do so. I am trying to put together a hardcopy
for everyone. Your privacy will not
be compromised only name & e-mail will be on web site unless you note
differently.
Auctions and Raffles: Jim
Boucher brought in a neat stout faucet and
jockey box set up for auction won by Clayton Goldman for $35.
Show and tell:
Mark Moody brought in his new design
for a wort chiller. Mark fabricated
a coil with multiple holes that wrapped around the outside of the boiling pot
and continually bathed the entire sidewalls with cool water thus assisting in
lowering the temperature of the pot.
Great
beers were enjoyed
by all, and I apologize up front for not remembering all the beers.
My memory loss is a combination of to much beer, no beer roster, mead and
delay in preparation of the minutes. I
do remember that all of the beers were good as usual and the old mead provided
by Russ was great. The combination
of great Belgians provided by Dan Stein and the brews brought in by “Elvis the Hobbling Hopster” topped off the evening.
2005
Dues ($20.00) should be paid @ January meeting. If not attending meeting make
checks payable to MKOB and send to

Christmas
Party:
Since we didn’t have a December meeting I would like to give a BIG
THANK YOU from the rest of the MKOB Krewe! to Jason and Nicole for
hosting a great Christmas Party. Or
should I say for letting the gypsies in the palace.
The food was great, the company delightful and the beer was flowing.
Thanks also to Tom Conklin (Crescent City) and Patrick O’Neal (Zeas’)
for the great brews. Also kudos goes to Willis Brewer for sharing his award
winning APA and all of the other brewers I may have forgotten.
Dan Steins’ delivery of the rare German alt and the Delirium Noel was
also greatly appreciated.
For you less fortunate souls that didn’t make the
party the food ranged from great fried turkey provided by Jason, crawfish pies
provided by Craig and Dee, ceviche, Jeff Hages’ smoked tarpon, Scotch Eggs
prepared by Don Shall(an English pub specialty) all kinds of salads and
casseroles, desserts ranging from wonderful cakes and pies including beer
fruitcake, baileys Irish cream pie (Laura Lee) and numerous other pastries.
Thanks again to all the Chefs the food was as always plentiful and tasty.
BEER TRIVIA: Studying the experimentally induced intoxicated behavior of ants in
1888, naturalist John Lubbock noticed that the insects that had too much to
drink were picked up by nest mates and carried home. Conversely, drunken
strangers were summarily tossed in a ditch.
